  • -Rashan, remember in your football game,
  • and the commentator [chuckles] didn't come,
  • so I went into the booth and commentated the game?
  • Yes!
  • Yes!
  • There you go, Rashan!
  • It was like, "Rashan did it again."
  • -It was bad, because, like, every time I made a play,
  • it was, like, so much excitement.
  • But, like, when everybody else did it, it was like, "Okay."
  • -Defense!
  • Let's go, Rashan!
  • Get 'em! Get 'em!
  • [ Laughs ]
  • -"Go ahead, Rashan! Go on!"
  • I'm like, "Uh..." -Ohh!
  • We went, and we commentated the game.
  • -You feel me? Parents was mad. Parents was sick --
  • -They was mad 'cause everything was, "Rashan, Rashan, Rashan."
  • Oh, they're gonna try it.
  • Stop 'em!
  • [ Audience gasps ] Oh!
  • Oh!
  • There you go, Rashan!
  • ♪♪
  • [ Heart beating ]
  • His father has always been a part of the picture,
  • but I just think that Rashan wants from his father
  • what he got from me.
  • I was always there.
  • Do we need a diva shot?
  • I'm in school, I'm talking to the teachers.
  • Now a happy shot.
  • I'm supportive in everything he does.
  • And sometimes I'm maybe too much.
  • You okay? -Yeah, I'm good.
  • -I love you. -I love you, too.
  • -I think Rashan wanted his dad to be what I was.
  • He's not an absentee father.
  • He's the uninvolved father.
  • -He could have been in my motivation
  • when I was growing up and I was finding out my future.
  • If he was there, then, yeah,
  • he would be a part of my motivation,
  • because I would have seen what he had to go through
  • how I seen what my mom had to go through.
  • Future -- Like, future, when I have kids,
  • I'll make sure that I'm not gonna be what he was.
  • So, some way, once I get my pride to the side,
  • like, yeah, I really want to, you know, sit down with him
  • and really talk to him and find out,
  • like, what happened,
  • like, what was the drop-off point,
  • but until I get over my pettiness or me being mad,
  • I'm not gonna do it.
  • [ Clippers whirring ]

  • -So, is there, like, a team that you would like to be in?
  • -No, I just want to accomplish my dream -- playing in the NFL.
  • I don't care what team it is. -Mm.
  • -If you know you look good, you feel good, you play good.
  • You feel me?
  • Ooh. -[ Laughs ]
  • -I gotta get everything trimmed up.
  • I'm a little rough around the edges.
  • My mom'll be happy -- me getting my hair done,
  • you know, me making sure
  • my appearance is what is needs to be,
  • 'cause, you know, Imma be around the public,
  • so I can't be going around looking raggedy.

  • -Now, this is Rashan Gary, defensive lineman from Michigan.
  • -How you doin'?
  • -And David Blough, quarterback from Purdue.
  • -What's up, guys? What's going on?
  • -Did you have to run away from him
  • anytime during your last four years playing,
  • or what?
  • -He's the reason I had shoulder surgery.
  • -Wow! Getting pressured! He's gonna go down inside.
  • It's Rashan Gary.
  • -What steps did y'all take to get to that next level?
  • Like, from high school to college,
  • and then to college to where y'all are at right now?
  • -First thing for me was dedicating myself.
  • I came out of high school
  • being the number-one recruit in the nation.
  • That came through hard work
  • and, you know, having a mom that stayed on my back,
  • you know, in the classroom, academically.
  • If I had a "C" on my report card,
  • I wasn't able to play sports.
  • And, you know, that was my upbringing.
  • And because of how my mom, you know,
  • instilled that in me as a kid,
  • that brought me all the way to Michigan.
  • In Michigan, I finished with a 3.0 GPA,
  • and I was also all big-time.
  • -No other questions for these guys?
  • No? They're ready to get to work, I guess.
  • -Yeah, enjoy y'all workout. -Yeah.
  • -Appreciate y'all.
  • ♪♪
  • -At the end of the day,
  • it's about maximizing your ability.
  • You're your own biggest competition.
  • It's not about overemphasizing and doing more
  • than you normally would do... -Absolutely.
  • -...but just basically taking the things that you learned,
  • the things that you've seen,
  • things you've prepared for, tying them all together.
  • -Throughout this process,
  • all I've been working on is getting better day by day,
  • but he knows it's that competitive --
  • competitive, I don't know, juice in me
  • that, you know, wants me to, you know, go hard every time
  • and just, you know, saving me from me.
  • -[ Chuckles ] So, there's phases to this.
  • We're trying to be the best at each phase,
  • and, like I said, you've been doing a great job at that.
  • -I'm living in the moment, staying in the moment,
  • and thankful for being in the moment,
  • but I just can't wait to, you know, get back
  • and tying up my cleats, putting on the shoulder pads,
  • strapping on my helmet, and going out there,
  • becoming the best player that I know I could be.

  • of what Michigan got to offer to the league.

  • -Lot of NFL coaches here in Ann Arbor today.
  • What did we see from the guys today at Michigan, Tom?
  • -Well, let's start with the top prospect, Rashan Gary.
  • He weighed in at 276 pounds,
  • and that was about it for Rashan Gary.
  • He opted to stand on his numbers --
  • they were very impressive -- from the combine.
  • Also did not participate in position drills.
  • Just sort of stood there, cheered on his teammates,
  • also had some meetings with teams.
  • -How you doin', coach? -What's up, man?
  • -I'm doing good. Doing good.
  • -Nothing today, huh? -Nah.
  • -Stand on the combine, huh?
  • -Yeah. -Okay.
  • -Why did you decide to take an off-day today?
  • -Yeah, you know,
  • I feel like it's time to get back to football.
  • I got a lot of parts of my game I need to improve in,
  • and it's time to get ready for rookie minicamp,
  • OTAs, you know?
  • That's what I'm focused on now,
  • and I feel like I did what I had to do
  • at the combine.
  • -When you go out and blow up the combine the way he did,
  • you don't have to do anything at pro day but show up and smile.
  • He actually ran the fastest 40-yard dash in combine history
  • for somebody over 275 pounds. -Yeah.
  • -He's a guy with all kinds of potential.
  • He needs to be cultivated and developed,
  • but all the ingredients are there.
  • -He's getting pressured! He's gonna go down inside.
  • It's Rashan Gary.
  • -I think sky's the limit.
  • He can run with the defensive ends,
  • he's physical as the defensive tackles.
  • Position flexibility in the NFL is a big deal.
  • -Rashan Gary unloaded!

  • -He's done everything.
  • He's a great high-school football player,
  • he's a great college football player,
  • he's going in, he's gonna be a first-round draft pick,
  • and he's gonna keep climbing.
  • -Soon as I step in the Big House,
  • a lot of memories come back.
  • This is what you come to Michigan for -- the tradition.
  • When you're walking down the tunnel,
  • "The Team," "The Team," "The Team,"
  • "Go Blue,"
  • and then you walk out.
  • You know, you got the banner right here.
  • You got to jump. You got to touch it.
  • Looking around, man,
  • it's a lot of great memories here.
  • I miss it, but, you know, after you've played
  • out in the middle of this field, and...
  • You know, every time I got to strap on that week,
  • I'm gonna go to where my brothers are pulling
  • and show for it.
  • These are great fans here at Michigan.
  • This is a blessing, man,
  • just to sit back and being able to reminisce,
  • but just know there's still
  • a lot of work that needs to be done ahead of me.
