A fascination with huge amount of death and gore is absolutely nothing new. The Elizabethans for example were rather partial to it. The Victorian masses loved their penny dreadfuls. Modern audiences love horror movies.

Only read the books. The endless descent into chaos and high character death rate takes some stomaching despite the strong stories. He's given himself a big task in pulling it all back out to a resolution from where he has taken it. I fear he has perhaps gone further down than he intended and the task is just too much.
