  • - Billboard recently reported that women are ruling
  • the Hot 100 chart in 2019 with artists like Ariana,
  • Gaga and Halsey leading the way and that chart-topping
  • winning streak won't be slowing any time soon
  • thanks in part to a young musical prodigy
  • by the name of Billie Eilish.
  • ♪ Say I like it like that, like it like that ♪
  • - In just over a year,
  • Billie has come from virtual obscurity
  • and a viral star to MTV Push Artist.
  • She's even receiving co-songs
  • from the likes of Lana Del Rey, Alicia Keys and Dave Grohl
  • who credits Eilish with keeping rock alive
  • and even compared her impact to that of Nirvana.
  • On Friday, March 29th, Billie dropped her record-breaking
  • debut album When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go
  • with numbers rivaling Ariana's debut for Thank U, Next.
  • Apple Music pre-adds alone had reached over 800,000
  • before the album was released
  • which was the most for any artist in Apple Music's history.
  • Now if you've been hiding under a rock for the past year
  • or if you're just over the year of 25,
  • you may be wondering how a homeschooled choir girl
  • rose to the ranks of pop royalty so quickly.
  • On October 2015, Eilish recorded the song Ocean Eyes
  • which was initially written by her brother,
  • now writing partner Finneas.
  • Song blue up on SoundCloud
  • and now has over 15 million streams.
  • A few months later, she dropped a music video
  • for the song which currently has over 90 million views
  • over on YouTube and since Billie is such a badass,
  • she also released an oceanized dance performance video
  • later that year.
  • She even came and performed the song on TRL.

  • ♪ You really know how to make me cry ♪
  • ♪ When you gimme those ocean eyes ♪
  • - Then in 2017, a Billie song Bored appeared
  • on the surprise Netflix hit 13 Reasons Why,
  • which had more social volume than any other Netflix original
  • and introduced millions of new fans to Billie's music.
  • That same summer, she followed the same Kanye Good Friday
  • marketing plan and dropped singles for her first E.P.
  • Don't Smile At Me each Friday during the month of July.
  • The strategy worked because Don't Smile At Me
  • went on the peak at number 14
  • on the Billboard 200 album chart.
  • Now the flood gates really opened up in 2018
  • as she released her single Lovely featuring Khalid.
  • Then 13 Reasons Why featured Billie on her soundtrack again
  • for season two and she got over six million views
  • in the first three days of its release.
  • Then came the onslaught.
  • She dropped You Should See Me In a Crown,
  • When the Party's Over, Bury a Friend and Wish You Were Gay.
  • All of these songs charted on Billboard and altogether
  • earned her over 300 million views on YouTube,
  • but no amount of success comes without its pitfalls.
  • ♪ Killing the son, ah ♪
  • ♪ Bury a friend, I wanna end me ♪
  • - Billie began receiving serious backlash
  • from belly-aching parents who felt that
  • she was sending a negative message to teenagers
  • due to her dark lyrics and disturbing visuals,
  • but in the tradition of teens loving the things
  • that their parents hate,
  • Billie's fanbase grew even stronger.
  • Billie now has over 15 million followers on Instagram alone.
  • Many fans expressed that Billie has helped them deal
  • with depression through her art.
  • Once you add in Billie's unique sense of fashion
  • and her refusal to compromise her artistic integrity
  • and of course that voice.
  • ♪ How am I supposed to make you feel okay ♪
  • - You've got the ingredients of one of the biggest
  • album releases of the year and now,
  • When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go
  • is finally here with record-breaking numbers.
  • Of course, to her true fans, Billie's success
  • comes as no surprise.
  • I guess you could sya the writing was on the wall
  • and the charts and the billions of streams.
