“I look at my life every morning and I see another day. I’ve been given a second chance and I don’t look at the negatives.” 63-year-old Laurel was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2006. “I had chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the same time. It was a tough year – I had to be fed through a tube at times because I couldn’t swallow. The biggest challenge was telling my children. But my...

Sara was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2018 - this is her Cancer Right Now. “I had two months of treatment, after which I was told there was no more evidence of cancer. “On New Year’s Eve, 2018, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. My world completely turned upside down. I’ve had a lumpectomy, followed by chemotherapy, radiotherapy and targeted therapy, which should finish this May. I’ll also need to take hormone medication for the next 10 years. However, although my journey has had dark days, I’m so proud of how far I’ve come. I managed to complete the Race...

“I couldn’t believe how quickly everything happened. I had surgery within two weeks of finding the lump.” Mark was diagnosed with testicular cancer in November 2016. He had chemotherapy and was treated with cisplatin – a drug we had a vital role in developing. “The support I had from family and friends got me through it. We filmed Pat having her head shaved while receiving treatment for womb and breast cancer, as part of our Right Now campaign. Since receiving surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a daily dose of letrozole, Pat is doing well and has been discharged. Thanks to research, Pat is enjoying her retirement with her husband of 43 years, George. Donate now and help more people survive: cruk.org/donate

Last year, we filmed Cheryl and her friend, Do, during treatment for bladder cancer. Cheryl was treated with chemotherapy and surgery to remove her bladder. She said, “You realise what’s important when you go through something like this, and I’ve come out the other side with lots of positives. My youngest daughter, Ella, got married earlier this year and we also took the whole family away last...

“While my body slowly recovered, I still had moments where I hid under my duvet and cried. Perhaps they were tears of joy or relief - who knows.” Chris, who you might recognise from 2017’s Great British Bake Off, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma when he was 24. His treatment included radiotherapy, chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. “My experience with cancer was over 20 years...

“Alfie put up the most incredible fight over the last five years, he made our family complete and has given us a lifetime of happy memories with him. We are so proud to call him our son and so happy he chose us to be his family. We don’t know how we will face the world without him but we take comfort in knowing he is now out of pain and no longer suffering.” You may remember Alfie, who we...
