  • Kristopher Landon's
  • Happy Death Day was the breakout success of the 2017 Halloween film season
  • making 150 million in the box-office over its 5 million dollar production
  • budget
  • If you haven't seen the film the protagonist is a Bayfield University student named Tree - short for Teresa,
  • apparently - who gets murdered by someone in a baby mask on the night of her birthday
  • She wakes up and discovers that she's living the same day again, only to be murdered again
  • And that every time she dies she wakes up on her birthday. It's like Groundhog Day, but with a psycho killer
  • You know what your little scenario reminds me of?
  • What?
  • Uhh
  • What's that?
  • Groundhog Day
  • The movie Groundhog Day?
  • With Bill Murray?
  • Who's Bill Murray?
  • Are you kidding me?
  • It's up to her to solve her own murder so that she can live another day
  • She eventually discovers that - spoilers here - her roommate Lori is the killer, so Tree... kicks her out of a window.
  • While I certainly thought that Happy Death Day was a...
  • Unique film, I couldn't help
  • But speculate that there were several solutions Tree didn't think of that would have ended the movie a lot sooner
  • So as someone who takes movies far more seriously than I ought to here are six ways to beat the killer from happy death day
  • Let's start with the specific constraints that Tree is under so that we may plan around them first off
  • She always starts the day at a dorm room at Bayfield University and though Bayfield university is fictional
  • The real University where filming took place is not. Most of the film was shot at Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana
  • So we will move forward with the assumption that Bayfield University is situated in New Orleans
  • You'll see why that's important later secondly, although the killer doesn't have any magical powers
  • It does seem that she's able to find tree
  • No matter where she goes the first few deaths are
  • understandable
  • Lori knows that Tree is going to the party
  • So it makes sense that she was able to track her down on the way to the party or at the party itself it also
  • Makes sense that Lori was able to find tree at her own room as they are roommates
  • However once tree starts looking for suspects Babyface is still able to track her down even though Lori should have no idea of her whereabouts
  • Lori shouldn't know how to find tree when she's lurking outside of Tim's window nor when she's stalking Greg's wife
  • It seems unlikely that Lori simply bumped into this random bush that tree is sitting in hell
  • She's even wearing
  • camouflage
  • And in a later scene Tree gets a massive head start on the killer by stealing a car and driving off without the killer seeing
  • Which way she went and yet the killer is still able to track her down?
  • One explanation is that Tree is using the location feature of Snapchat
  • Which lets your friends see your whereabouts at any time and since Lori is trees roommate
  • It's reasonable to assume that Lori would be friends with Tree, and she could track tree that way
  • But we don't know for sure in any case let's move forward with the assumption that the killer can find tree wherever she goes
  • This means that generally speaking
  • Running or trying to escape will not be a viable option
  • Even if Tree gets on a plane and flies to a random country
  • There's nothing stopping Lori from getting on a plane to and tracking her down, so that's a rule number two rule number
  • Three is that the killer will start coming after tree at some point in the evening the clock always hovers around 9:30 p.m.
  • When the killer shows up on the scene
  • But because tree changes things each loop including what she says to Lori it seems reasonable to assume that Laurie would at least be subtly
  • influenced by this
  • causing her to comfort Tree at different times
  • It is at the very least after the sun comes down but most likely sometime around 9:30 p.m.
  • Rule number four is simple Tree does not know who the killer is
  • We see that in the movie the game ends very quickly once tree figures out that Lori is the killer
  • There's nothing stopping her from trying to figure it out, but at least at the outset
  • We are unaware that Lori is the killer rule number five is that after each death the day will reset the same way
  • Now there is a small argument to be made here that each day won't be exactly the same
  • We get to see this opening scene seven times and not once does Carter's friend
  • Bursting at the same time even though the day should be looping exactly the same
  • There's nothing happening in the room that should affect when this dude bursts in my running theory is that?
  • Carter's friend is also in a time loop and keeps trying different times to open the door in the hopes of seeing tree undressed I
  • Mean it could also be that the director is a total hack and didn't consider maintaining continuity in a movie about time loops
  • But it's definitely one of those two things, but for the sake of this exercise
  • let's say that more or less, each day will reset exactly the same way
  • The sixth rule is the number of deaths Tree is allowed before she dies for real.
  • Every time that Tree dies she comes back more and more injured and the film hints that she has a limited number of loops before she's killed for good.
  • I don't think I have that many chances left.
  • While that number is never revealed,
  • We do know that tree dies on screen 10 times and survives
  • however what tree actually says in the film is
  • Also staying for the 16th time so either tree said this flippantly without actually counting how many times
  • She's died or she died several times off screen at which the audience was not made aware
  • Because we don't know which is which we're going to take the average of these two numbers and say that the maximum number of deaths
  • Possible is 13 it could be less than this or it could be more
  • But this is as close to an estimate as we can get however the first death was
  • essentially unavoidable from trees perspective
  • So we will count the first death as being necessary
  • Therefore the actual maximum amount of deaths one can injure without dying is at least 12
  • So with those rules the aim is to beat the killer by dying as few times as possible because dying has some actual physical
  • Quinces a solution that uses as few debts as possible is objectively better than a solution that requires more so without further delay
  • Let's try to beat the killer from happy deathday
  • There are two categories of solutions lethal solutions and non-lethal
  • Let's look at the non-lethal first the first solution is prison look
  • I never said this was a list of good
  • Solutions if you saw the film you may have noticed that tree does realize that prison is a possible answer and this marks our running
  • Theme and happy deathday of showing the audience's solution and then promptly ignoring it in this particular scene tree
  • realizes that if she commits a crime
  • She'll go to prison a place where the killer can't reach her if I am does that mean that you're going to arrest me
  • And lock me in a jail cell
  • That's how it usually works
  • I'm drunk and despite this being a legitimate solution tree never attempts it again in
  • Louisiana a DUI has a mandatory minimum jail time of 48 hours for a first offense
  • Which means tree can get through the day without dying because the killer can't reach her if she's in jail another quote-unquote
  • Good crime is possession of under 15 grams of an illegal substance
  • Such as weed or cocaine which has a minimum sentence of 15 days while jail time would technically stop
  • Babyface from killing tree at the end of the day
  • She could simply wait until tree gets out of jail and then kill her again
  • It's also possible that whatever is causing the time loop won't work it tree gets through the day
  • Which means that if she does go to jail?
  • Gets out after a few days and then gets killed that would be game over for her so the real answer
  • Here is to commit a series of crimes so that one stays in the prison system
  • Forever just commit a crime the moment you walk out of prison to renew your stay while this isn't much of a life it is
  • a way to live without being murdered and it's one of the few non-lethal ways to survive the
  • Situation of course you could also be killed in prison
  • But that's another matter entirely the other wrinkle here is that Louisiana still has capital punishment
  • So you should avoid crimes such as rape murder or any other crime that causes grievous harm to others?
  • Probably the simplest crime to commit without causing others harm is selling weed to an adult which has a mandatory minimum
  • sentence of five years for first offense and ten years for any subsequent offense
  • It would not be that difficult for tree to find pot at her campus, or let alone any other campus
  • And then try to sell it in front of a cop living the rest of your life in prison is obviously not a good solution
  • The other and much better option is just to ask the police for help if you go to the police and tell them that someone
  • Is trying to kill you they will help you that's why the police are a thing the only problem is that you have no evidence
  • And you couldn't even point them towards a possible
  • Subject unless of course you use one of your life to see who babyface is by taking off her mask
  • Remember that fun montage where she tries to figure out who the killer is?
  • She really didn't think of just pulling the mask off the killer she wastes four lives trying to figure out who it is instead of
  • You know figuring it out who it is by checking herself?
  • If you went to the police and tell them that your roommate Laurie is trying to kill you that would significantly
  • Increase the chances of the police finding evidence such as a knife a mask or poisoned cupcake Laurie would be arrested and the conflict would
  • be over
  • but maybe maybe you don't want to involve the police for some reason then consider calling John Carroll a private investigator and
  • Bodyguard based in New Orleans he can commit to an assignment with same days notice
  • and he could protect you from baby-faced by either killing or
  • Incapacitating her as he's proficient with six different firearms
  • and if you want to go the nonviolent route John was a cop for 18 years and could leave the
  • investigation against the killer
  • But this would probably also requires
  • Sacrificing a life to pull the mask off of Laurie the second set of solutions is to quite simply kill the killer
  • We'll move forward with the assumption that tree can claim self-defense
  • If she kills someone armed with a knife and a mask who attacked her
  • Hell she kicked Laurie out of a window in the place never arrested her
  • Which is why the fourth way to beat the killer from happy deathday is
  • the home depot
  • Okay, let me explain
  • There are several instances in happy deathday were tree attempts to use a handheld weapon to kill baby face
  • And the only reason she isn't successful is that she's bad at it
  • For example in this scene she hits the killer with a hammer which was very successful
  • But she then attempts to flee but what if you know you just kept hitting baby face with the hammer
  • Just some reason why this wouldn't work just keep hitting her with a hammer
  • Just kill her kill her bash her brains to quell
  • The fire axe would have been effective had she actually used it
  • And if she had used a baseball bat on the killer instead of the sorority sister the movie would have been 44 minutes long
  • babyface is only ever armed with a knife so if you want to avenge your own death the
  • Old-fashioned way by killing your would-be murderer
  • There are plenty of options at the New Orleans Home Depot for violently defending yourself against a crazy
  • roommate with a baby mask so why not swing by your local Home Depot to pick up an ex a pickaxe a
  • Machete go old school and get a 2x4 or a sledgehammer crowbar nail gun
  • chainsaw screwdriver pole saw and my personal favorite wood chipper
  • It really comes down to personal preference, but you get the idea
  • Well, these are certainly unreliable methods remember that you have upwards of 12 attempts to get it, right
  • You only need to be successful once you can also buy your tool of counter murder in the morning and practice with it all day
  • Then find a tree or a doorway or any other place you can surprise and attack the killer
  • But the real answer the bestest answer the most
  • Hilariously obvious answer the answer that I cannot believe tree didn't think of the weapon of choice for the entire world since
  • 1364 is a gun
  • Who's that Pokemon?
  • If you're trying to avenge your own murder pick the tool that has been
  • Reliably used to kill people for the last 700 years a gun is easy to use and most
  • Importantly gives you a large range advantage over anyone wielding a knife heck
  • How old baby face will feel like she brought a knife to a gunfight?
  • Because she did bring a knife to a gunfight
  • The caveat is that you need to obtain a gun within the span of one day as the killer will come after you at around
  • 9:30 p.m.
  • This is why it was so important to determine exactly where Bayfield
  • University is because each state has wildly different gun laws and as it turns out
  • Louisiana has some of the loosest gun laws in the country in order to buy a gun in Louisiana
  • You don't need a permit to purchase. You don't need to register the firearm
  • You don't need an owner's license. You don't need a license to open carry in public
  • There are no assault weapon restrictions, and there are no magazine capacity restrictions
  • Which means the only obstacle to walking into a store and walking out with a gun in Louisiana is a federally mandated?
  • Background check before working on this video my knowledge of how background checks worked was limited to this one Simpsons episode
  • Just give me my gun sorry the law requires a five-day waiting period we've got to run a background check
  • But I know in 1997 the year that this episode released it took five days to complete a background check
  • Nowadays however it takes only a few minutes
  • Those who have committed felonies have restraining orders have been addicted to drugs or have severe mental
  • Illness would not pass his background check and since tree has never been arrested
  • Ever been arrested before and has shown no evidence of drug use or mental illness
  • She would be able to purchase a gun and ammunition to defend herself from the killer and only in
  • Or two, which is why the fifth solution for beating the killer from happy deathday is pause for effect
  • Walmart Walmart is the largest seller of firearms and ammunition in the United States tree could buy a gun from her local
  • Walmart spend a few hours
  • practicing with it
  • Find a room with a single entrance such as her own bedroom for example wait for the killer to show up and then shoot her
  • Since the killer is always armed with a knife this should be open and shut
  • But let's say that for some reason tree couldn't pass a background check
  • What if she was actually a felon?
  • Then she shouldn't be able to buy a gun right actually no because Louisiana does not require background check if a gun is sold
  • Privately there are almost no guns to find on Craigslist
  • I did find one about an hour's drive outside of New Orleans there are many guns available on arms list calm
  • Which some have said to be the Craigslist of guns
  • I visited arms list which is widely known as the Craigslist of guns the founder of America's largest peer-to-peer
  • Firearms sales website known as the Craigslist for guns NYC officials probing arms lists calm the Craigslist for well-known is Arms
  • luscom essentially Craigslist
  • Craigslist
  • like
  • Website for gun sales Brooke Higgins searched for weapons on arms less calm site is called the Craigslist of white arms less calm makes it
  • Easy to avoid background check like Craigslist forego sites like arms list which is known as the Craigslist for guns
  • It is entirely feasible to contact a seller on arms list and pick up any gun that suits your fancy
  • before the end of the day with no background check required in fact one study in 2011 found that up to
  • 54% of sellers on arms list would be willing to sell to someone who probably couldn't pass a background check
  • On this particular day. I was able to find 23 guns for sale just in New Orleans alone including shotguns handguns
  • semi-automatic rifles a 22 magnum revolver and this adorable micro gun
  • Which the seller?
  • Specifies would be available without a background check these sellers by the way are also selling the appropriate ammunition
  • And that's why arms lists common solution number 6
  • You could also try to steal a gun as tree does here, but that seems like an extremely unreliable method
  • I suspect the missing 6 death
  • We don't see on-screen are actually heard getting shot by this cop when she tries to take his gun so those are six very feasible
  • solutions for beating the killer from happy deathday
  • Which one would you pick let me know in the comments if you have any of the solutions?
  • Or if you think these wouldn't work. Thanks for watching and until next time this has been the film Harold
  • Here are some of the other weapons in Arms list calm knives bows and arrows
  • crossbows with swords
  • flamethrowers
  • Okay, what the fuck?
